It won’t startup, It gets past the chime, I put in my password for my username then the loading bar just stops.

Ahoy, the fairpirate-- maybe I can help you out....

you'd have to boot up from the Recovery partition, to do that, shut your macbook air down, and press the power button, holding down Command/apple key and R together. if you see a language selection screen, it worked. pick one and go on. From there, use your trackpad/mouse (if you have a mouse, that is) and move the cursor (the arrow) to the top center of the screen and click. You should see OS X Tools. from there, you can choose to re-install the OS, but before that, run Disk First Aid from Disk Utility, and then re-install the OS. seeing as how you haven't yet installed Sierra, which is 10. 12.4, Option command R held down on startup gets you the OS that originally came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

see what that does.

apart from Internet Recovery, which means plugging in an Ethernet cable into your MacBook Air, and holding down Command, Option and R together, after you do a shutdown of your mac. You'd see a spinning globe and a progress bar.

that's all I have for now

Huh...if you’re trying to install from the recovery partition, that could be a problem.

apart from doing a reset smc/pmu and zap pram, I have nothing else to suggest apart from making a bootable usb stick. I don’t know if you have access to another Mac and a spare usb stick. You should be able to get a copy of El Capitan easily. Older os’s Are get-able, harder but possible. I don’t know what os you were running before, but as John Galt said, you do need to reinstall the OS. In this case internet recovery might work if recovery from the partition doesn’t. If you can plug in an Ethernet cable, do so. Wifi will work, but it’ll be slower. Reboot, holding down option, command, r together until you see a spinning globe and a progress bar on your screen. As for the bootable usb stick, that’s possible. You’d have to prep the stick with disk utility , and then google/ yahoo how to make a bootable usb stick for Mac. I’d write more here but am replying on an iPhone so can’t type any more

Newer version should work. eBay maybe?? Can’t speak From experience on this one.

rolled my own so to speak.. oh... looky there... it’s not available from the App Store or the Apple store... not on USB stick.. if you can find an open Apple store.. take it in.. should be free but if not Is available on Amazon on USB stick or DVD disk if u have a DVD drive. Apart from finding a Mac user nearby you.. buying a USB stick and then talking nicely to them, that might be an option for you.. not the best option.... But an option.. El Capitan, Sierra, high Sierra , mojave , most of ‘em should work. Didn’t like Yosemite.. had some kinda wifi /internet bug in it.. as in wifi didn’t work, period.

im replying on an iPhone so am typed out for now.
