How do I erase old data from my external hard drive?

Open Disk Utility (In the Applications/Utilities folder).

Select the disk you want to erase.

Click the erase icon.

Select the level of security you want. Higher security means over-write more often.

Large drive may take a long time.

erase all information on disk So if I select a disk for backup and if that ask me to erase the information because it is not formatted as required so it will erase all my information that was already stored in the backup disk before?
