Some of the folders backed up to my icloud drive are now empty both on multiple computers as well as in the icloud. Cant tell how or why this happened but I need to get these files back. From reading this forum this seemed to have happened to others also and i have seen comments by people who managed to get their files back after similar problems but not clear how they did it.

That wouldn't work anyway. If the file doesn't exist, there is nothing to download.
Do you have a Time Machine backup? You can easily restore from there. It's important to know that iCloud is not a backup but a synchronization service. If you modified a file anywhere, it will reflect everywhere. Otherwise, check your trash to see if any files can be recovered. Files don't typically go missing on their own so you might still have the files somewhere on your computer.

Try Downloading All of iCloud:
Download all of iCloud. Then, search for files through use of the Search Bar in a new Finder window. Perform my User Tip: Getting a Quick and Direct "iCloud Drive-to-External Hard Drive" Download - User Tip

If greyed-out on iCloud.com itself, then there’s nothing to downloads. So, recovers item the old fashioned way —browse around...
