QuickTime Player not saving screen recordings correctly

I have an issue with the application QuickTime Player and the way it outputs screen recordings. After finishing a screen recording of some sort, it will save as this un-openable Screen Shot instead of a .mov file. To be specific, I usually use CMD + SHIFT + 5 to open the screen recording/screenshot prompt, record as usual, end the recording, and it saves as I just explained. The selected file is the final result after I finish a screen recording session. Moreover, it WILL save the recording correctly occasionally after a few tries, but attached seems to be what I get most of the time.

Hi TheHappyCloud486,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand that recording a screen isn't working consistently, and is saving a screenshot of the recording instead.

I'm glad to help with this.

Just to be sure that everything is being done correctly, check out the steps here:

How to use QuickTime Player - Apple Support

If this is still happening after confirming the steps above, try setting up a new administrative user and testing there. That will help isolate if there is an issue with your main user account.

This explains how to do that: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

Take Care.
