Mac Mini Clicking (2018 i7 6 core)

Howdy!

Just brought home a brand new Mac Mini (though it says it's a 2018. Is that right?) and sometimes when it's idling it produces an audible, repetitive clicking sound. tik tik tik tik tik tik tik tik tik ..... Until I wake it.

My first thought was hard drive but it's a 1TB SSD so then maybe the fan but surely it can't be messed up already. The ticking sound is waaaaay annoying though. Like, I'd return it if it's not something I can fix.

Any tips?

Thanks in advance!

2018 is the latest Mac Mini's model. The ones released in 2020 are new, but still carry the 2018 model designation.

The exhaust fan should not be running run in full sleep mode. So I would suspect that, it is either not in full sleep mode or that tic tic tic is comming from the power supply.

You might want to pop off the bottom cover and listen, but personally I do not recommend working a new Mac Mini, because if you damage something, then it could very well void your 14 day return guaranty and your 1 year warranty.

If you bought it from an Apple Store or AASP, then take it back and have them listen to it. If they want to keep it for repair, ask for a replacement or invoke your 14 day money back gaurranty.
