My daughter will be using my old macbook air and wants to reset it. If I turn on iMessage on the macbook, will it delete the messages on my desktop? I have googled this question and get mixed answers.

Turning Messages off on the laptop shouldn't affect Messages on the iMac. If you are going to transfer the computer to your daughter, I suggest you do the steps in the article below to make it 'her' computer.
