I have managed to get it back working as a telephone!

I did the following steps:

  • Back-up phone to computer.
  • Erase without restore
  • Warnings that it wouldn’t restore the iPhone because it needed an update.
  • Sure enough when the iPhone came back to life, it would not restore.

Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201263

  • On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, open iTunes. If iTunes is already open, close it, then open it again.
  • iPhone 7 : Press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons AT THE SAME TIME. Keep holding them until you see the recovery mode screen.
  • Told me it was going to recover the iPhone.
  • iPhone 7 came back to life and Vodafone appeared!!
  • With it connected to iTunes it did a Restore as above.
  • It took about an hour to restore. And even longer to download all my apps.

Hello,

I tried this and now my iphone cannot be activated. I was able to use apps from wifi however after trying this method, I can't even complete the activation. This may be related to my model of iPhone 7 - A1660 which qualifies for the no service repair program. But as it is past 4 years since the time of buying I cannot apply.

On my screen, the subject of the thread is "Q: “No Service” after iOS 13.5.1 iPhone update"

Regardless, I am having the same issue with my 4 month old iPhone 11. It updated to 13.5.1 a few days ago, and last night started displaying "No Service" as well as occasional "SIM Failure" pop-ups. I was able to get it to start working again after doing a network settings reset, and the phone worked fine up until an hour or so ago when it started again.

Interestingly, my phone has a physical Verizon SIM as the primary, and a AT&T eSIM as the secondary, and this is happening to both simultaneously. The Verizon SIM still works perfectly in other phones, so it's not the SIM card or the network, and the AT&T eSIM continues to show "No Service" even with the Verizon SIM removed.

I won't be able to get to an Apple store until Friday or Saturday, so I'm hoping there might be a solution sooner. In the meanwhile I may reluctantly try a full reset and restore but it looks like all the solutions suggested here so far can be hit-or-miss.

I was having this exact same issue on my iphone X straight after the 13.5.1 update which I did through my PC and iTunes. I spent 3 days in total messing around trying everything to get back the cellular service. I had to start using my old iphone 6 again (software version 12.4.4) with the same SIM and Cellular network and it was working fine. Then, a couple of days later I decided to put my SIM back into my iPhone X again and it was working!! and hasn't lost Cellular service since. Strange!

It's an even more interesting coincidence that the Verizon SIM worked perfectly in my old iPhone 6S and my wife's iPhone X during these same times my iPhone 11 was acting up. Equally fascinating is that both my iPad and Watch on Verizon also continued to work perfectly the entire time my iPhone was having issues (including this morning when it happened briefly while sitting at my desk, which now make 3 days in a row at varying times, but zero issues with other devices including my wife and colleagues). Are Verizon and AT&T outages IMEI-specific? Are they somehow able to coordinate between carriers and target both IMEI's in a dual-SIM device?

Is down detector able to alert me when only my iPhone 11 will be impacted so I can make sure I keep a backup device with me?

I started having this same issue last night on my iPhone 11. I've spent 8 hours today trying to fix it with online support and then going to the Verizon store (i'm in Boston). I've reset network settings, factory reset it and now I've restored it twice from iTunes - NOTHING works. Seeing that this has been an issue for over three weeks based on these posts I don't understand how Apple hasn't pushed out an update by now. This is extremely frustrating on all accounts since both Verizon and Apple don't know how to fix it!

Same with mine, 8 hours on phone to Apple techs and a visit to Genius Bar. They’ve tried everything possible reset etc and phone is now dead. An Apple don’t want to know, won’t accept it was the software that started this. Told me to go to o2 and complain under the consumer credit law 2015. But to do this I have to prove the fault was on the phone within first 6 months of purchase - impossible.

You seem to know a lot about the issues with iPhone 7’s. Mine is now completely dead not responding to anything Apple do. It is a different model to the link you used previously it’s A1778 assembled in China. Do you have any other links that include this model please. Or a link that relates to the dormant hardware issue. Anything that I can use against Apple to make them give me a new phone. As so far my only option is to purchase a new phone.

Apple told us my husband's iphone7 model would NEVER work with the new update. Told us to send it in and they would send a refurbished model that would. Then claimed the phone was damaged other than the repair request and returned it. There is nothing wrong with the phone. The screen isn't even scratched. The only issue was the update. The letter also says if its sent in again they will charge a $100 diagnostic fee and the cost of repairs. WHAT REPAIR!!??

As this is a long thread, I did not get a chance to read through all of it.

However, a friend of mine has the same problem and when I tried putting in my own Sim (from different provider) on his phone it seem to work, although, his SIM, doesn’t.

This drove me to think, maybe the problem lay in the version of the Sim itself

I told him to try and talk with his provider and see if he can get a newer Sim and try in his phone

Gee, Lawrence I wonder if you *really* think I haven't checked that my iPhone 7 wouldn’t be part of that problem. But wait, I’m UK based, those dodgy phones were sold in China , Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, and the U.S. and my phone’s model number doesn’t match. Sorry for the sarcasm but I have also *obviously* tried the other link to get the phone to work.

What brought it back from being a brick was plugging it into my Mac, backing it up, holding the relevant buttons down and erasing it and restoring it

Apple’s Genius tells me that I could get the phone “repaired” for £300+ as it’s “out of warranty” (it’s 30 months old).

Meanwhile, it continues to be flaky and crashes a few times a day, although not yet today.

Given that it all hinges on applying update 13.5.1 and involves models other than 7, it is Apples fault.

I personally updated a model 8plus to 13.5.1 and on completion had No Service. I then had the wherewithal to back it up, format and restore. Since then it is working perfectly. So the install faltered and my experience was not unique. How many people don’t have that capability and are shelling out Bucks to replace or get their phone fixed for no good reason.

Jun 28, 2020 3:30 PM in response to FranzWebber

Once again. This is related to the update 13.5.1 and although the original post mentions "iPhone 7" (obviously it's the model they own) other models above and beyond experienced the same problem, when the same software upgrade 13.5.1, installed itself. Some have managed to overcome the fault with a complete backup, factory restore and reset as I have, and for some this didn't work. But many have shelled out bucks for service or replacement. This problem exists across the entire world and Apple need to release a fix asap.
