I have finally managed to work out how to install my Sony software update.

In my case the download comes in as zip file which automatically opens to a .pkg file,

my problem was that I was trying to open the .pkg (which you would normally do) and it wouldn't.

When the .pkg automatically opens the zip file is put in the trash.

I put the zip file onto the desktop, opened it and it opened to a folder

with the .pkg inside.

I simply dragged the folder with the .pkg into my USB stick (FAT32 formatted)

plugged it into my Sony TV.

Went through the settings to Software Update, selected USB and pressed OK.

And it did indeed install.

The version of my software is now up to v8.881 from v8.764.

What model of Sony TV do you have, I could have a look at the Sony

support site and see if it is the same update, or a different one

with a different method.

What type of file are you downloading from Sony? Unless the download is a .zip file or .dmg file, then macOS most likely should not be opening the file. Safari is set to open "known" files by default so it is possible the file you are downloading "appears" like a file macOS is familiar with, but the file may not be what it seems. Disable this setting to automatically open known file types in the Safari preferences. It is possible the file you downloaded is sitting in the Downloads folder. Or use a third party browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Vivaldi to download the file from Sony.

Keep in mind most instructions for updating devices assume Windows will be used. Many times it is possible to make the instructions work when using another OS or there are other ways to achieve the result.

I have a Sony TV, and noticed there was an update available.

So I downloaded it, opened the zip file, which opened to a .pkg file.

Double-clicking on that came up with an error.

So I guess Sony have not prepared the download for macs.

Is there a reason you are not using the TVs own software update

feature, just plug in an ethernet cable from your tv to your router.

Then go through the TVs setting till you find the software update feature.
