Try powering off the BlinkFlashFlow AirPort Express
Leave it off for a few minutes
Power it back up
Restart your Mac
Temporarily, move Jim's AirPort Express to the same room as your main Express so that it has line-of-sight with the main Express
Then go through the setup that I outlined above again
If the Express sets up correctly, move it back to the desired location
If the Express still won't set up correctly after a few more tries using the steps just above, the Express is defective. The model that you have.......A 1264......was discontinued in 2012, so the product is at least 8 years old and as much as 12 depending on when the device was placed into service. 5 years was about it......on average......for this version of the Express.
You can buy new, refurbished and used Airport Express products on eBay if you need to replace the old Express. Go for the newer version if you can.

What model number of AirPort do you have?
What exactly needs to be "updated"?
Will you be using a Mac to "update" the AirPort?
Save yourself a trip unless you need other things at the Apple Store.
There are no AirPort Expresses or other AirPorts at the Apple Store. Apple discontinued the AirPort line more than 2 years ago.
If you want an AirPort, check out Ebay as I mentioned above.
Bob: My Airport ID is 403CFC0314B9 Version 6.3.9. I use it to extend range from my Apple Modem connected by Ethernet cable to an Arris Router supplied by my cable company. I have lost the password for the Airport as I haven't used it for several years.
Thanks Bob. I did everything you said but the Wizard doesn't complete the setup. It just keeps cycling on the "Reading settings.." I disconnected it and left it overnight then did full reset - about 10 seconds thenwent through the procedure again. Do I need to be up close to Base Station - I am in the next room to the Base Station connection to Arris cable router and Apple modem.
Thanks for your help Bob. I did as you said and voila! Mirabile dictu. It went green! Thanks for your help and advice.

PS I will stop off at an Apple store and see what the latest version of an "extender" Airport Express.
I have a MacBook Air 13" 2019 model (my third) with Catalina software and an iPhone XR I purchased last year.
I responded to your other post on how to reset your Express base station so that you can use it to extend the wireless range of your other Apple router.
Simplest thing to do is set up the AirPort again.
Power up the AirPort if it is not already on, then hold in the reset button on the AirPort for 7-8 seconds.
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the WiFi menu at the top of the Macs screen and look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station
Click directly on the AirPort model that you have. The example below shows an AirPort Express.
When you click on AirPort Express, that will start up the AirPort Utility setup "wizard". The wizard will take a few seconds to analyze the network and then suggest the correct set up.
Follow the prompts.
