CommCenter process sustained >100% CPU Load

Weird time lately with Apple products. Seems like bugs are cropping up left and right.

I've had issues with run away processes consuming memory on my apple watches, still unresolved. Issues with macOS process spinning up with console message wrapped in 'private' mask making it difficult to assess what's happening.

The other day I had AMP (music) processes that would spin up causing me to delete my library to resolve. Today I have 'CommCenter' spinning up with 125% cpu usage, fans on full blast and 30 hours of CPU time.

Any one else running in to issue with run away processes like this? Would like clarification on what CommCenter is responsible for.

Here's a sample of Errors it's throwing in console.

Hi there, Jason.

I see that your having a problem with your iMac. The Console report shows that CommCenter is using 125% of CPU usage and the fans on your iMac run at maximum. I'm glad to help with this.

How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac -- Reset the System Management Controller. Follow the steps under "Desktop computers" to reset SMC. Once you're back to the Desktop, see if the issue has resolved.

How to use Activity Monitor on your Mac -- If resetting SMC didn't resolve the issue, use Activity Monitor to if there’s more than one process causing the issue.

Let me know how that goes.

Take care.

I suspect there is a larger issue here that apple has not made public.

I see multiple processes related to server based tasks spinning out of control on all of my Apple devices connected to my iCloud account, and appear to impact other accounts associated with my account through Family Sharing, thought I can't say if this is an issue with Family Sharing OR a result of sharing a large volume of Notes, Calendars, etc with another Apple ID.

At this point I have Apple watches I can't use because they fill with log data and I experience a wide variety of odd behaviors I've never noticed in the years of advanced user experience with my apple products.

The issues I've had were so severe and atypical that I felt compelled to report them to the authorities, documenting what I witnessed in the event this becomes a larger issue related to apples platform security.

Apple is being very quiet, they have no timeline for addressing our Watches, their front line support is not informed on the issue, and I continue to see a large volume of data being transferred between Apple processes and I what I hope are their servers, I'm not able to tell because Apple has masked all relevant console data with 'Private'.

Today I work from my Laptop and iPhone primarily with my desktop devices and watches offline and in storage. At the moment I see the 'routined' process using 103% of CPU resources with 13:30:10 hours on the CPU Time.

This is typical behavior I've noticed since April/May. An apple process that appears related to syncing with iCloud or managing communications has a process that runs away, using massive amount of resources for no apparent reason as my iCloud activity to my knowledge, based on how I use my machine does not appear to indicated this demand.

Since may I've taken steps to isolate my machine as best I can, going so far as to securely wipe and network restore all of our iOS devices only to find the behavior return once they are associated with our Apple IDs and iCloud services.

I've mentioned this connection to front line support and provided apple with sysDiag logs across all of my devices to document the behaviors, going so far as to capture console messages, logs, and other images during the event.

I've opened ~10 feedback tickets since April outlining the odd behaviors and system performance issues I've faced. Apple's response? Silence.

I work in healthcare, I have access to sensitive data, many of these behaviors appeared more dramatically (OS crashes) soon after signing a contract to provide reporting support for a government agency.

Because of my background I pay very close attention to how my devices function and I've installed all of the typical and more advanced tools to ensure my machine remains clear from outside influence, I don't open email attachments and proactively report emails to iCloud Spam or other providers when they come across.

I'm not sure how many others are out there in similar situations, I've seen over a hundred views on my community threads related to my Apple Watch issues, with a few people reporting similar behavior, all hearing the same response from apple... TBD.

At this point all I can do is document, my devices continue to be unstable, requiring reboots to resolve issues with bluetooth connectivity, app unresponsiveness, and memory use. Again, none of these responses to demand by my devices align with my actual usage of the device.

Any who, that's my experience so far. I hope this will help others.

Thanks BreeZee,

I’d consider myself a fairly advanced computer user, and I work with my hardware daily. The steps you provided are helpful, but ultimately don’t address this issue.

Soon after posting this the process ramped down. But the behavior of run away processes on my Apple devices and instability in their connections have peaked during this pandemic and increase in cyber threats, threats Apple has disclosed they are susceptible to have me worried.

like many people now, I work remotely. I have data traveling to me through devices I’m not sure I can trust anymore.

for the last few months I’ve noticed process that appear to be Apple developed running away. Many of them having to do with communication to outside servers. I assume Apple, but I can’t tell because Apple has masked a lot of information in the console as Private.

so here is my question. Every device that I link to my iCloud account has started behaving badly since mid April. I’ve wiped all of my devices. Didn’t restore from back up and I have cycled All of my password to random strings some 32 chars in length.

I work with sensitive data. I’m observant.

dispite these effort, that include virus scanner, Keylogging scanner, etc. I’m still not sure.

so my question is this. If Apples core iCloud services were hi-jacked. SQL injected and channels redirected/filtered/skimmed. How would Apple know? How would the user know?

why is apple’s autocorrect getting worse at guessing the right word? If someone changed the language it uses for example in the background would it start autocorrecting correctly spelled words or swapping them out with the wrong word with greater frequency? How would that impact communication between people?

Apple may have design the best spying software of all time. It’s watching everything and most of us. If that data was intercepted and leveraged apples own technology to do it. How would we know?

btw, I’ve reported these behaviors to feedback Assistant, Apple’s product security, the FBI and local police.

i don’t expect Apple to disclose what is happening. and if they haven’t asked these question internally, they really should.

if there is something we as users should be doing to determine or report please share it. I’d like to know what is typical for communication processes. What are specific signs your computer is working harder than it should with Apple?

for example, would more data than normal be create in TM ? I’ve seen that too. Would your Apple Watch’s memory fill up with data it doesn’t identify in the usage report? Would your network connection become unstable or slow down?

im also curious if those few people that are reporting similar issues have jobs working with sensitive data. Are they close to people in power. Another question Apple should be asking.

If the next world war is going to be online Apple needs to teach us how to defined ourselves.
