Can't create proxy file for raw video file on iMac Pro

Hi everyone, I am on the latest version of FCPX and editing on an iMac Pro. I recently bought the new Canon 1DX MK3 and trying to edit the 5.5k raw file. When I import the clip, I leave the file in place and tick the option to create proxy file. Then when imported, I see it perfectly fine in the browser. Under the view menu, I select to view proxy and the missing file icon shows up. However, no rendering takes place to create the proxy file. I click on the clip to try and transcode but the options to create optimised media and create proxy file are both greyed out.

The strange thing is, when I do exactly the same thing on my 16" MacBook Pro with the same settings, it creates a proxy file no problem.

The raw video files are on the internal hard drive for both machines but for some reason nothing happens on the iMac Pro. I read somewhere that if the performance of the machine is good enough the FCPX won't give you the option to create optimised files but does this also apply with proxy files?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Johnny.

Etrecheck is a diagnostic utility created be etresoft, a frequent contributor in this forums.

It produces a report that allows others here to know enough about your hardware and software, so we can notice possible causes of problems. It can be downloaded from the App Store.

You should run Etrecheck, the click Share->Copy Report.

Start a reply here, click the "additional text" button and paste.

You can use just the free version.

To produce a report: File->New Report

For more detailed results, give Etrecheck "Full Disk Access" in System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Privacy

and activate this in Etrecheck preferences, under "Privacy": allow full access to the startup drive.

When it finishes the scan, click Share Report and choose "Copy Report"; then paste in the additional text box in your reply.

Here are some screen grabs of FCPX.

The first one: I right click on the clip in the browser window and choose transcode media. Both options are greyed out.

The second one: I right click on the transcode media on the event "14-6-2020" and the option to create proxy is available. However, after ticking the box and clicking OK, nothing happens.

Would it be of any use to uninstall and reinstall FCPX?

Hi Tom,

Thank you for your reply. I have tried resetting preferences holding the opt-cmd method but it doesn't work. It still doesn't create any proxy files. The storage location for my project is as per default settings. Everything is on the system drive and I'm not using any external drives until I solve this issue. I did try using an external drive before but the same thing happens. It is odd the say the least and I don't know why it won't allow me to create a proxy file. The video clip in the browser plays back ok but not perfectly smooth because I can see some frame dropping and occasional stutter.

Hello and thanks for your reply. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Here is a report I generated to see if there is anything obvious that might be stopping my iMac Pro from creating proxy files from the 5.5k Raw files from my Canon 1DX MK3. I tried creating proxy files from 4K video clips I recorded and FCPX had no issue creating proxy files from them. Just seems to be the Raw files. My MacBook Pro is creating proxy files no problem from any video file.
