My iMac keeps crashing! Catalina 10.15.5

Everything is fine and the all of a sudden I get:

com.apple.appkit.xpc.openAndSavePanelService (not responding)

It makes other apps not respond and eventually Finder will not respond and I can't relaunch it. I try to shut down or restart and it just hangs and I have to turn off at the power. It's happening two or three times a day.

Earlier, I noticed it happen when I tried to print to pdf from Word. Sometimes, when I leave the mac on for a while and come back to it, it's just crashed and I have to turn it off. It's driving me insane!

It's been happening ever since I updated to Catalina.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jane let us know if this changes anything...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

You can save us asking dozens of questions by submitting a report from this App for us to look at…

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...

The important part is...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

Some people have reported that SafeMode is slow, but I've not really noticed.

Thanks for the info. It didn't crash in safe mode. However, I couldn't do much work in it so I had to switch back.

My iMac crashed again before I had chance to install EtreCheck. Google Chrome stopped responding. I force quit it and tried to reopen but it still did the same (not loading any pages, just hanging). This time I checked Activity Monitor and it showed nothing as not responding. However, when I right clicked on the app in the dock it said it wasn't responding. The same was true for Skype as I had it open at the same time. It showed as working normally in Activity Monitor but not when I right clicked on the dock item. Also, none of the apps were showing as not responding when I selected Force Quit from the Apple menu. When I went to shut down the computer, all the apps I had open stopped responding and I had to force quit them manually. The dock and menus disappear and the screen hangs on the desktop picture. I have to hold the power button to shut it off.

I've downloaded EtreCheck and done a report now. I hope the pastebin link works. Here it is:

Thank you for any help. It is much appreciated.

Same issue. I have a brand new MacBook Pro that repeatedly freezes. Catalina 10.15.5. Only app that is open is Chrome browser. I have 32GB RAM, so this really shouldn't occur. Frustrating. I wish I could roll back to Mojave.

My full specs:

2.3GHz quad-core 10th-generation Intel Core i7

Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536MB

32GB 3733MHz LPDDR4X

Catalina 10.15.5

I've had a lot of similar issues since the Catalina upgrade. For me, my iMac hangs, screen goes black and it looks like a re-boot but my applications look like they're all re-starting. This re-start process can take 15-20 minutes. Once things settle down, I close my apps and re-boot just to be safe.

I run a mixture of apps all of the time so I am not sure what combination of events kills my system. This happens every few days ... is the best approach is to reboot my iMac on my own every couple of days? Catalina just feels so unstable.

Thoughts on how to make things more reliable and stable? I don't think I'm doing anything too out of the ordinary ...

Right now, I'm just dealing with the Catalina slowdowns and crashes, trying to remember to proactively re-boot every few days before anything goes awry ... I really can't afford the time to do a deeper debug, so controlled reboots are my answer. Whatever happened to "it just works"?! Back in the day, my Mac would be rock solid for months at a time.

It's all very unfortunate.
