Is there a problem with Final Cut Pro X working on an iMac operating on Catalina?

I am working on a virtual choir project (layering a lot of short videos on top of one another). I have an iMac recently updated to Catalina and am using the free trial of Final Cut Pro X. I was thinking of buying the program, but am now concerned because the more videos I loaded (32), the more times the program crashes, especially upon rendering. What can I do to fix this issue? I am almost finished but can’t seem to get it to render.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

32 layers of video is really pushing that system with a spinning USB drive. I don't know if the computer can be upgraded, more RAM and a graphics capabilities would be great. It really doesn't have a dedicated graphics card? If you're looking in About This Mac make sure you have an application like FCP running, or it will only show integrated graphics.

I'd suggest creating proxy media for your video and switching to proxy playback while you're working. Select the clips in the browser. Right-click and choose Transcode Media. Proxy playback is in the Viewer popup menu in the upper right.

Try arranging the clips in 4x2 (fill the entire screen). Render out each section separately. Start a new project and re-import the grid videos, stack them in the storyline (it will only be 4 instead of 32), scale them down to fit 1/4 screen and render out the final.

If you have the room, Optimize all your clips (right click on your clips and Transcode Media and select Optimized and/or Proxy).

Since you're using scaled down media, you can use Proxy which should perform better.

That is a brilliant idea. My concern would be getting the right mix of sopranos and altos in the audio. I wasn’t sure how to export the audio to mix it outside the program but separating that might help too.

Luck and determination last night, I did a couple of things that worked. I rechecked and made sure I had created the optimized and proxy files.

I clicked on a couple of more recently added files. and realized that not all the files were located in the same place on the external hard drive. I had created different folders on it by dragging them from the desktop so FCPX was searching in a variety of places. My research indicated it would be good to consolidate the files in the project so I did that.

Once they were consolidated I did a couple teeny edits at the beginning and then was able to render the project. However, in looking at the background tasks I saw the Sharing was stuck at 18%, which I think was the location of the section of about 10 secs that wouldn’t render before. So I closed FCPX and reopened it and that was cleared. I was able to successfully share the files to my desktop.

I want to now create a new project using the video of the group singing. It would appear it was smart to export it as one chunk. I am a little worried the overall volume clips in the loudest sections while the balance is good. I am hoping I can adjust that when I import it back in rather than trying to go back to the original project and bring everyone’s volume down a bit and have to re-render and share that bigger file. Fingers crossed but now that the files are consolidated I might be ok?

I also used iMovie to create a little video of the credits and dedications at the end over just the accompaniment track. I will pull These two videos in, add a title to the overall project, add some cropping, panning and zooming on the choir file, and hope for the best.

Thank you so much for responding so quickly. This is a labor of love for this special project dedicated the the girls’ former choir director who is sick. However, as an accompanist involved with a number of choirs who are struggling to find ways to “sing together” in this way, it would be so helpful to have a knowledgeable person like yourself create a tutorial on the workflow for such a project, the tips and tricks, the limitations and workarounds. I have been looking since mid March, and have found a couple of choir directors making some, but someone who knows the program would know know what we should make sure we do at the different stages to avoid getting bogged down at the end. For instance, with 9 layers it was still working on my Mac itself with all other programs closed. With 18, lots of dropped frames. I got the 4TB hard drive and got to 24, but then the rendering process started to fuss. If you do create a dummy’s guide, please let me know. Once my friends see this video, I have a feeling I will be asked to help with more. It really isn’t that hard if the program doesn’t bog down.

So my long diatribe about consolidating etc worked great last night when I shared the file to the desktop, but without FCP open it now it doesn’t play well in QuickTime Player. Going back to square one and trying your suggested Divide and Conquer technique. Makes a lot of sense. Stay tuned .... (I am definitely a rookie, as you can see, but a very determined one.)
