No. A Time Machine backup drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+. It can be normal or case sensitive.

I never use Time Machine. I prefer Carbon Copy Cloner for keeping up-to-date, bootable, cloned external drives. All other data is manually backed up each day. Also to a separate drive so everything is on at least two physically different drives. Very difficult to lose everything that way.

Unknown to me why TM would have changed what it thought was the target back up drive to the Toshiba NTFS HDD.

As far as the correct drive (the Mac OS HDD at 97% ?). This would be normal for TM. It keeps as many iterations of your data as it can on one drive so you can restore the OS or other data to any point you choose. However, when the drive is full, it starts deleting the oldest versions. Basically, once full, it's always nearly full.

Thanks for the instant reply Kurt, that answers part of my problem. I have just discovered that Time Machine has not backed up for several months. The usual Time Machine HDD is formatted Mac OS Extended, but I use NTFS for MAC because I also use MS Office for MAC and share data with another laptop. With only 2 USB sockets I have to swap these HDD in and out. However, I just checked Time Machine Preferences and discovered that the Toshiba NTFS HDD is nominated as the Time Machine device to be used for backup. I don't remember selecting this, but I notice also that the Mac OS HDD is 97% full. Have you come across anything like this?
