Backup External HD to Time Machine without mounting ?

Is it possible/How to backup contents of external hard disk with Time Machine without mounting folder on MBPro home disk?

I think I have solved my question:

I created an alias of the large folder in the external hard disk and then mounted the alias on my MBPro home disk.
