Pairing Macbook Pro (2014 High Sierra) with iPhone (SE)

MY MACBOOK PRO WON'T CONNECT TO MY iPHONE. Your help would be very much appreciated!

(A possible clue: Bluetooth seems unable to discover the iPhone, since it is not shown on the Devices list, even when I tried plugging the phone into the Mac and opening it.)

By the way, pairing via bluetooth (with the exception of use for instant hotspot) is not and has never been supported by macOS or iOS. This is not a supported method for data transfer, but is necessary for them to both have Bluetooth enabled if you want to use AirDrop.
