Does Apple Pencil 2 Write Without a Tip?

Hi. I think I might have damaged my Apple Pencil 2 by dropping it on it’s tip but it still pairs, shoes as fully charged and the double-tap features works to call up the Colour Palette in Notes.

I’m hoping it’s just the plastic tip, slightly flattened now, that I need to change.

My question is, should the pencil be able to write — even being careful not to scratch the screen — with no tip at all? The answer might help me decide whether I need a new pencil or if I might get by with new tips (though I don’t want to waste three or four days waiting for them to arrive if they’re not going to help).

All informed advice very much appreciated! Thanks

OK.......Just because I'm a nice guy, I removed the nib from my Apple Pencil and I can confirm that without the nib it does NOT interact with the iPad screen.

Thanks for reply. I’m just trying to establish whether or not the lack of response from my iPad Pro is due to a broken tip or to a broken pencil. The wait time to get either is significant in terms of workload and, of course, I’d rather not spend money I don’t need to. Buying the tips is the lesser of two punishments but a waste of time and money if my present experience suggests the tip is not the issue. Hence my question to other pencil owners: without a tip attached, does the IPad Pro respond to the touch, or proximity, of the Pencil? I wouldn’t call it academic :)

Thanks. I’m still hoping someone will remove their pencil tip and report if touching the screen activates the writing/painting/‘touch’ response. I can’t see how that would in any way risk or compromise the screen or the pencil. It would take a week to get replacement nibs where I am and I might still have no functioning pencil even then. Thanks anyway.

Hi again. I just wanted to thank you again for your advice and patience last week. I've since purchased and received a set of apple Pencil tips and, lo and behold, my Apple Pencil works perfectly again. This both save me nearly a week's wait (because new pencil were out of stock) but it also save me almost €100, half of which I will now happily donate to a local charity helping people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Many thanks for your friendly help. Good wishes.
