Apple Pencil Tip

I’ve had my iPad Air for just over two weeks now. I bought an Apple Pencil 1st gen open box from Best Buy, but it looked as if all that had been done to it was the box had been opened, it didn’t seem like it had been used much aside from a little dirt between the tip and the pencil. I do use it fairly often for drawing and note taking since I’m in art college, but even free just two weeks I already wore a tip down to the metal. Is that normal? Could it be that the previous pencil owner had used it more than it seemed? I do have a matte screen protector on it but before it wore to the metal the pencil really didn’t look like it was worn down. Please give me some insight, I know the tips aren’t supposed to wear out this fast and should last much longer!

That looks like pretty excessive wear!

Do you bear down on the Pencil to get it to write on the iPad screen?

Also, because matte screen protectors have a “tooth” or texture to them, the friction of the screen protector's textured surface and the Pencil’s plastic tip can wear down tip more than normal.

The are makers, now, of special silicone tips you can place over the Apple Pencil tip to make the tip last longer.

I do press a bit harder than I probably need to, I’m used to a drawing tablet that required a TON of pressure so I’m trying to retrain myself to not do that so much. I’m almost wondering if it is the screen protector too, because I put the new tip on two days ago and it already has some wear as well. Likely going to remove it and try to learn how to deal with the screen texture

Depending on the apps you use, some apps have pressure curve settings, within the app, that you can tweak, that will allow you to use less pressure with the Pencil on the iPad's screen.

While the textured screen protector will cause some wear, I really think it is your “heavy handed-ness”, with the Apple Pencil, that is really the true cause of your Apple Pencil tip wearing issues.

You need to make efforts to “curb” that type of stylus screen drawing behaviour.
