After Catalina 10.15.5 update, MBP Battery Drain and it Shuts Down Suddenly

Bizarre issue here: the new "Battery Health button" (delivered with Catalina 10.15.5) is not available for some older MBP models (like mine, 15' mid 2014). Ok. But after install this update in my MBP, battery is now drained very fast EVEN WITH THE CHARGER CONNECTED, and it is drained until the MBP SHUTS DOWN ITSELF without energy. And what is even more strange: the battery icon (on menu bar) keeps showing it is connected and 100% charged. (The battery icon shows it is charging or 100% charged, but suddenly the MBP shuts down itself, and when it restarts, on the boot/login screen, the battery icon shows only 8% (or some number around this), so if I try to complete the boot, it turns off and restarts again, like if has no power enough yet (even with the charger connected). So I have to wait for a complete battery recharge to reboot.) So, after this update I can't let any software performing tasks for a while, because the battery doesn't holds the power EVEN WITH THE CHARGER CONNECTED(!?). (I already reseted SMC, verified charger, plugs, cables, power source, etc.), everything seems ok (my charger is almost new, I changed it 1 year ago), but the battery problem after the update persists. This MBP never had any problem with its battery before. Because of this issue, now I need to wait some hours charging the battery before get back to work. Please let me know if is already something I can do to solve this, I think is very unffair, even if my mac is already out of warranty, transfer to me a cost of a problem probably caused by a failure produced by an update file that Apple provided. Please let me know what can I do in this case, I use my MBP for work and need it a lot. Thank you.

A Troubleshooting Procedure that may Fix Problems with macOS El Capitan or Later

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

If possible, backup your files before proceeding.

  1. Shutdown the computer and disconnect all third-party peripherals.
  2. Wait 30 seconds before you restart the computer.
  3. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
  4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  5. Reset your Startup Disk and Sound preferences, if needed, after resetting the PRAM.
  6. Test in safe mode to see if the problem persists, then restart normally.  Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac and Playing Safe - what does Safe mode do?
  7. Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.  Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  8. Repair permissions on the Home folderRepairing permissions in your Home folder has changed for Mojave and Catalina.
  9. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button under Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  10. Download and Install the macOS Catalina 10.15.5 Combo Update.
  11. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Install OS X then click on the Continue button.
  12. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:

     1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on the Continue button.

     2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.

     3. Click on the Erase button in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.

     4. Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

     5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.

     6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.

     7. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.

I already tried resetting SMC and PRAM/NVRAM, but the issue persists.

About your other suggestions, they seem to try to solve a particular case, but the problem I mentioned seems to be general (I already saw other people reporting similar problems) and started only and just after the Catalina 10.15.5 update, so it seems to be really related to some failure of the file Apple provided (this MBP never had battery problems before). And plus the fact that this 10.15.5 update is supposed to change how MBP manages the battery (by the Battery Health option), makes me believe more that this problem is really related to some fail of the update file, related to how this update version behaves with some older MBP models (like mine). I already wrote to Apple support today and will wait to see what they have to say about the problem. Thank you anyway.

Update: So, yesterday (June 12 2020) I had a call with Apple Support about my issue, spoke with two attendants (one was some kind of engineer of the advanced Support), and after I explain with details what was happening with my MBP, she told me that the issue may yes be caused by a failure in the Catalina 10.15.5 update in some Macbook models, and to solve this, one of the possibilities we discussed about was to reinstall the original Catalina OS "from zero" (without any update pack), to see if this could solve the issue. But she also told Apple does not recommend using outdated systems (for a number of security and performance issues). So, as my MBP is not completely inoperative due to this problem, we conclude that the best to do now is wait for a new update (Catalina 10.15.6) that will probably comes out soon with bug fixes (which is already being seeded for developers (as reported by MacRumors: https://www.macrumors.com/2020/06/09/apple-seeds-macos-catalina-10-15-6-beta-2). However, in my case, the issue persisted for 3 days even after I reseted SMC and PRAM, but since I enabled automatic updates (2 days ago), the issue seems to be already solved, so I thought maybe Apple already sent some minor and silent update which solved the issue... I hope this is what happened.
