receiving duplicate emails

I am currently running 10.13.6 on my imac and my mac email client is downloading duplicates of the same message over and over. I have gone to the email server and deleted any trace of the duplicate messages. I have changed nothing other than a OS update. Duplicates arrive about every time the client searches for new messages.
