I have a 2016 MacBook Air 12" laptop. What is the best cable setup to use this laptop via HDMI to use on a flatscreen TV?

You have one USB-C Port on your 2016 12" MacBook Air. You normally use that port for charging your MacBook.

To connect to your TV's HDMI-in Port you will need an adapter and a HDMI Cable.

See image below of the USB-C Port that you will need to use

See image below of the adapter that you will need.

This is Apple's USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter that you may connect to the USB-C port of your MacBook Air.

Then you will need a standard HDMI cable to go from the Adapter (Center port) to the TV.

Your MacBook Air supports Dual display and video mirroring: simultaneously with full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels at 30Hz on an external display, both at millions of colors.

You are not going to be able to charge your MacBook Air while using this adapter since the USB-C port will taken up by it.
