Missing document folder on Mac

Documents and Desktop are missing in Finder. Only available in Icloud.

I'm going nuts with this.

OK. Let's not panic. Do a little inventory for me, please.

  1. Do you have iCloud Drive listed in your Finder's sidebar? If you do, then select the sidebar entry of iCloud Drive. In the ensuing Finder window are the Desktop and Documents folders listed? Double-click on each folder. Are your data in their respective folders?
  2. Are you able to sign into your iCloud web site in your browser? If you can, then are the Desktop and Documents folders listed in iCloud? Check each folder to see if your data are there.
  3. Do you have the Desktop and Documents folders listed in your Home folder? If you don't, then create the folders. Open the Finder to your Home folder or make that location active in the Finder. Press Command-Shift-N twice to create two untitled folders. Rename each of them to Desktop and Documents, respectively.
  4. What is this "archive" you mentioned, and where is it located on your computer?

Please let me know if you are able to work through the above items.

You activated iCloud Drive and selected the option in iCloud preferences. Open iCloud preferences. Select the iCloud Drive entry in the list and click on the Options button on the right. In the ensuing list uncheck the box labeled, Desktop and Documents Folders. You will need to download the data from iCloud to the computer. The data may still be on the computer. It would be located in the /Home/Library/Mobile Documents/ folder.

Sorry, I don't understand. What is meant by an iCloud archive? Is this an archive stored on iCloud? Did you disable the Desktop and Documents Folders option in iCloud Drive? Your data should be on iCloud Drive which is listed in the Finder's sidebar. If the data have been transferred to iCloud, then you should see a little cloud with downward pointing arrow gadget next to the folders in iCloud Drive.

I have done so many stupid moves. I dont know where I am. When I signed out of Icloud it had an option to save some things on my Mac, and I did that. Someone also suggested, I download or drag the document file to my user files. Right now my desktop is not populating. The desktop file is under iCloud file archive and also appears in finder. What a mess!

I need to get my desktop back and be able to access my documents in finder
