Did you turn on iCloud Drive?
Turn off Desktop and Documents
What happens when you turn off Desktop and Documents
When you turn off Desktop & Documents Folders, your files stay in iCloud Drive and a new Desktop and Documents folder is created on your Mac in the home folder. You can move files from iCloud Drive to your Mac as you need them, or select all of your files and drag them to the place you want to keep them.
Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support
Icloud is on, that is all I know. The only way I have to get to Apple ID is thru internet accounts, there iCloud is checked. Under options, desktop and documents is checked. IF I uncheck it, will I lose all my documents saved there? Will I have to copy or drag all those documents into a new document folder?
Yes you have to drag them back...

When I uncheck documents and desktop, this is the message I get:
"If you continue, items will be removed from the Desktop and the Documents folder on this Mac and will remain available in iCloud Drive. "
I did not uncheck it yet cause I don't know what I am doing.
OK, do that, then in a Browser like Safari, go to...
icloud.com
Sig in& look for iCloud Drive, open that & Select All with CMD+a keys, drag to the new Documents folder in your Finder repeat for Desktop.
Ok I did all of the above and it will not let me drop the iCloud files into the documents folder. I can drop them into what is called a,Microsoft user data file within documents. Something is not right.
I tried to move the files to a new documents 2 folder and apple called it (data).textClipping and nothing appears when I click on it. I guess I should take the computer in to service. I have taken up too much of your time. Thank you
I am not sure I will know how to drag them back and from where?. Fear of losing documents.
ann

Can you see theDesktop folder in your Home folder?
Maybe make a new folder in your Home folder call Documents2 & try dragging the files there.
Ok will try
OK, good luck my friend. :)
Thank you for trying and for your efforts.
