How to connect macbook pro 2018 to external monitor Dell U2515H?

I'm having trouble getting my exernal monitor (Dell U2515H) to work with my Macbook Pro 2018.

The monitor does work with my old 2012 macbook pro using a cable from the monitor's Display port to macbook's thunderbolt 2.

For my macbook pro 2018, I used the same Display port cable to a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter to the macbook. However its not working - external display is not detected.

Is there recommended way to connect?

Hey there, a_jay_a.

Great job with testing out the display with another Mac! That isolates the issue to the display not working as expected with only the 2018 MacBook.

You mentioned that you’re using DisplayPort to Thunderbolt 2 cable with a Thunderbolt 3 adaptor. Are you able to test just a Display Port to Thunderbolt 3 cable? Looking at the tech specs, that may be the best option: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) - Technical Specifications

Also, review how to connect a display to your Mac: Connect a display, TV, or projector to Mac - Apple Support

All the best.
