Can’t connect to Apple ID server when trying to erase an old iPhone 5 for my daughter. Please help?

SeeIf you can't connect to the App Store, iTunes Store, or other Apple services https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201400. There have been quite a few Apple server connection problems lately. Among other things, see Check Apple’s System Status page from the document. Using this page you can try to do what you want after making sure the needed server is operational.
