All of a sudden my iMac displays a persistent popup message, even after restart.....
"iTunesWriter" will damage your computer. You should move it to the Bin.
The pop up includes two buttons to select: <Move to Bin> and <Cancel>, neither of which works.
How can I get rid of this nuisance?
(My iMac runs macOS Catalina ver 10.15.5, and iTunes is not installed.)

Uninstall any anti-virus software. It does not find any virus (there aren't any) and can cause problems.
Malwarebytes is useful, but the free version is sufifient.

At your suggestion I installed Malwarebytes and it solve the problem. It also found some other problems lurking elsewhere and quarantined them as well. Frustratingly, my virus protection (Sophos) found none of these things!

Great news thanks, & as Malcolm says uninstall Sophos per their directions then run etrecheck again to see what chaff it left.

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts..
