The iPhone 6, released by Apple in 2014, is too old to use iOS 13.
iOS 12.4.7 is the end of the updates for this model.

I have a iPhone 6+ and just updated it a few weeks ago to iOS 12.4.7. Your iPhone 6 is too old to update to iOS 13 and you have to purchase iPhone 7 or higher to update to iOS 13.
Electronic equipment becomes obsolete. And there aren’t many apps out there yet that do not run on iOS 12. In fact, I can’t name one.
Unless you absolutely need iOS 13 for some reason, no. You don't need to buy a new phone. Why do you need iOS 13 exactly?
iOS 12.4.7 is still capable of running pretty much all current Apps just like iOS 13 and is at this time still likely to get any security patches released in the near future.
So unless there's a specific thing you need from iOS 13, iOS 12 is perfectly functional.

Ancestry ...
I checked the App Store and agree Ancestry - Family History requires iOS 13.
I then checked Ancestry’s website, specifically:
https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/Ancestry-App-Installation-Sign-in-Guide#incompatibledevice
I found this there.
Sure enough, Safari is a recommended browser.
Well, there are other conveniences that a six year old iPhone lacks, such as Face ID and OLED displays. It’s to be expected that as electronic hardware ages, newly introduced features (conveniences) will appear.
So this Apples way of making me buy a new phone if I want to use apps set up for iOS 13?
Ancestry and some car stereo Bluetooth systems. I have friends that have other apps that won’t work up to par too. I’ll ask them and let you know what they are.
Now you can name a few...
See below
Not very convenient is it?
