"file name" is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Bin.

I have recently updated my MacBook Pro to macOS Catalina. Since then I cannot open any document (e.g. Word, Excel, PDF, etc.) in Finder. A popup windows says: "file name so and so" is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Bin.

I can only open the documents by going into the individual app and chose "open" in File.

I saw some other posts which suggested starting in safe mode but that did not help.

Any other suggestions? Thanks

MacBook

Hi meier_st,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand that after upgrading to macOS Catalina you're seeing an error when you try to open documents from Finder, but you're able to open them without issue in their respective apps. I can see why you'd reach out about this; I'd like to help. I'd recommend taking a look at the steps titled "Apply permissions to all items in a folder or a disk" to verify that the permissions are set correctly: Change permissions for files, folders, or disks on Mac

If you continue to have trouble, try testing for this behavior in a new user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Let us know what you find.

Best Regards.
