I bought an iMac in February that came with Catalina installed. This is my first time to try to open iMovie. It will not open. I've tried everything I found in support. I have no iMovie library. There is no cache. It will not open in safe mode. I deleted preferences (which I'd never set anyway.) I had one movie on my previous laptop. It is nowhere to be found either. Catalina version now is 10.15.5. All apps and iMac are up to date. Help!

No need to start another thread.
Try redownloading iMovie. To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the trash. Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from
there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash and return it to the Applications folder.

It seems I can't edit my post. I did find the previous movie and imported the new movie in Apple TV, which apparently replaced iMovie. But, I can't get either the old or the new one to play. Just get a black screen. I will move this question to another thread.
