How far away from your phone can you still us Face ID to open?

Of course, your face must be visible.
Further, check out the notes at Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Require Attention for Face ID.
Sure it can be on the arm rest as long as the iPhone is awake and your face is in front of the camera.

Ok so it has to be held in your hand only Can’t be on the arm rest where you are sitting
Face ID will work when you are holding your iPhone comfortably in your hand and looking at the front camera. In my case the iPhone is up to 2.5 feet away from my face.
