ls: /dev/tty.usb*: No such file or directory

I've been using Arduino for many months now.

It has suddenly stopped working as it cannot find a serial port

/dev/**.Bluetooth-Incoming-port/ is the only option available. Serial ports are greyed out.

ls: /dev/tty.usb*: in Terminal returns No such file or directory

Occasionally restarting the Mac regains the serial port for a brief while.

I have made no recent changes to the hardware connected to my machine.

Any pointers welcomed (be gentle, I am out of my comfort zone here)

FWIW, I have an STM32 Nucleo board and its serial port shows up

as /dev/**.usbmodemxxx (and "tty."). The FTDI USB-Serial adapters that

I have show up as **.usbserial-FTxxxxx and (and tty."). Both are

working very reliably.

Are you sure your connection is good? I have seen in various software

update sites that there have been recent updates to the Arduino development

environment. Perhaps they address the issue or if you have updated,

perhaps there is a bug in the update.

Generally, if a USB device does not show up, it is more often than not

a hardware issue in my experience. You can verify this by plugging

the device in, and looking at System Information and see if it shows

up in the USB section listings. If it isn't there, there is a hardware issue.

Also, is the board externally powered or USB powered and do you have add on

boards? If bus powered, you could be drawing power beyond the USB spec which

would disconnect the device.

@R Sterling. Not sure it is the Arduino's fault. Mac serial ports do not seem to be available any more (I have been using the program for about 18 months with no issue, suddenly something has changed). The below comments may prove that statement wrong.

@MrHoffman; No new apps installed. Which Arduino; All of them! I have both Nano and Mega but one forum said try a different board and the serial pop's back. I tried EVERY board listed in the menu and no joy.

@Woodmeister I have both several boards and several cables (all USB-A at the Mac end, but micro B, type B and type c at the board end), no combination shows a serial link. In Arduino serial ports is greyed out, the only available option is /dev/**.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port which, of course, is not a serial port. There are six devices shown in system info under USB 3.0 Bus and one under USB 3.1 Bus. None change when I plug in any Arduino's but the LED's on the Arduino (and any attached boards) illuminate. Although I do have a bus powered board most trials are USB powered only.
