USB-A Superdrive support in Ventura?

My USB-A Superdrive no longer is recognized by my MacBook Pro since I installed Ventura. Is there a fix?

The Apple USB superDrive draws 900 milliAmps. A typical USB port on a Dock supplies 500 milliAmps.

It MUST be connected to a USB port on the chassis to have any hope of working.

sorry, but you spoke with someone that is mistaken. I can assure you that there are MANY users here using the superdrive on M1 (M2) Macs without issue. is yours connected through a dock or hub? it will not work that way.

I just came here because I was having the same problem. I realized what was happening was the pop-up that asks for permission for device to connect was only appearing for a few milliseconds and then disappearing. I tried plugging in the Superdrive a few times and eventually the pop-up stayed visible and I was able to give permission for it to connect. I had this same thing happen with accessories through a Hyperdrive hub I use. Seems like some kind of bug that makes the permission pop-up disappear.

I'm on a 2022 Mac Studio Ventura 13.2.1 and the Superdrive works plugged into the USB A on the rear, no problem. It didn't appear on the desktop until a CD was inserted, but it did appear in System Report as being connected. It didn't work thru USB A on my Satechi Hub. I haven't tried a USB C adapter, I figured there was enough discussion about people having issues.

I don't know what to say. but there are definitely people using them with many different M1 machines on Ventura. they do in fact work on M1 iMacs on Ventura 13.1. i know for sure that the person who told you they don't work on those machines is flat out wrong. just because they work for apple doesn't mean that they know everything. no-one can know everything.

are you using the apple branded USB-C to USB Adapter? I have seen one case where a user was using a third party adapter that wouldn't allow it to work.

A Satechi USB C Combo hub wired to the Super Drive somehow blocks said drives slot loader.

yes, that's a known issue. in almost every case, the superdrive will not work through a hub or dock. I have seen one hub from OWC that they claims to be superdrive compatible. and since it is OWC saying that, I tend to believe it. but I don't remember the exact model hub it is, as I wouldn't want to recommend a $150 USD hub just to connect a superdrive. :)

Thank you for your help, but the USB-A Superdrive worked well on my MacBook Pro with macOS Catalina before I installed macOS Ventura. I do not think the problem relates to the power requirements of the Superdrive... And I am not using a dock. I plug the USB-A superdrive into an apple USB-A to USB-C adapter so that it will plug into my MacBook Pro. The superdrive makes a brief sound when I plug it in now, but it will not accept a CD disk and the drive is not recognized in the Apple Music app or in the disk utility.

I can see two "USB 3.1 Bus" lines which appear to correspond to the 2 ports on the mac. I have tried plugging the Superdrive into each of them and it is not recognized in either. I have also tried restarting the mac which did not fix the problem.

I did see a thread which said macOS Ventura does not support USB-A. That may be the root cause.

I am wondering if anyone else has this problem?
