Mail - IMAP server issues. ISP says it's a Mail problem...can u help pls?

Against the IMAP server folder the screen shows an 'alert - an exclamation mark in a triangle. It also shows:

Maximum number of connections from user+IP exceeded (mail_max_userip_connections=10)

Previous posts on this website suggest opening connection doctor. I did this. It shows 1 IMAP connection to the server and 1 SMTP connection, plus the same to my Gmail. I also have my iphone and MacBook connected for Mail in the same way.

The help desk at my ISP say this is an Apple Mail problem. Something to do with opening new connections every time the application looks for new mail.

Any help - as simple as possible pls - would be much appreciated.

Thanks. stephen

Hello BathChair,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand you're unable to access your email account on a Mac.

Accessing your emails is important to complete your daily tasks. I'll be happy to help.

I recommend to verify the settings for your email account by visiting this link here: Mail Settings Lookup From there, I suggest verifying the email settings in the Mail app by following these steps: Change Server Settings in Mail on Mac

Please keep us posted with the results.

Kind regards.

Sorry, but this advice did not fix the issue.

When I tried the Mail Settings Lookup, the reply was:

'Mail settings are not known for your email provider. Please contact your provider for correct settings.'

As I said in my original post, my provider LCN.com says that the problem I'm having is related to Apple Mail.

So I'm going round in circles.....

Any other ideas?

BathChair,

Thanks for getting back to us and for providing those details.

I was able to locate the mail settings for LCN. This way you can adjust the settings in the Mail app on your Mac: LCN - How to set up your email account in Mac Mail From there, see if you can send and receive emails in the Mail app without an issue.

Also, you can rebuild the mailbox by following these steps: Rebuild mailboxes in Mail on Mac

If these steps do not help, I recommend to contact Apple Support to review this further. You can contact them through this link here: Contact Apple Support

Cheers.

Hello Bryanr14 -

unfortunately this has not solved the problem, although at the moment, there are no warning messages appearing.

I have spoken again with LCN. They directed me to the following link:

https://news.scarabmedia.com/help-center/how-to-disable-imap-idle-in-mac-mail/

It seems that a recent update of Mail removed access to this function called 'IMAP IDLE'. This function leaves the server connection open, but it leaves multiple connections open instead of just one, causing the warning messages. Prior to a recent (not sure when) update to Mail, the 'Use Idle' setting could be disabled by accessing Preferences/Accounts/IMAP account name/ADVANCED. This is no longer accessible as far as I or LCN could see.

LCN is suggesting contacting Apple Support for help - but happy if you guys can offer any other insight into solving the issue.

BW and thanks for your help so far. stephen
