Ethernet connects, but no internet

I managed to connect to my LAN via an ethernet cable and my Mac shows that I am successfully connected. However my computer won't connect to the internet via the ethernet. Wifi works fine, but I'd like to connect via the LAN/ethernet to reduce latency to the minimum. Thanks for any suggestions...
