How do I get the sort options back in Files app?

In the middle of trying to type, the options came back. But now something is causing the keys or buttons on my iPad to lag & take more of my physical energy to press the keys.

Here is a picture I managed to save from the article on the Files app. The area that gives us the options to Change between list and icon view, including Name, Date, Size, Kind, Tags were briefly removed for some reason

The elipsis in the Browse column are controls related to finding and accessing files, and what gets displayed in that column.

Tap elsewhere to cancel that pop-up.

The edit option within that elipsis menu allows customizing what controls are available within Browse.

This red-circled pop-up menu provides more ways to access files:

Until you connect to a document scanner, or connect to a remote file server on a Mac or Windows or other computer, that menu does nothing. Tap on the screen away from that circled menu, and it’ll disappear.

Screen films can effect touch sensitivity.

If you don’t know what was pressed on the screen, then we don’t know.

Why your keyboard is malfunctioning, we don’t know. Is this keyboard the pop-up on-screen keyboard, or is this one of the external Bluetooth keyboards that are available?

If it’s the on-screen keyboard you’re using, that keyboard will typically only appear when the cursor is in a text-input field, and it’ll disappear when the cursor leaves a text-input field.

If the side volume controls are getting triggered, using a different case might reduce or avoid the accidental triggering.

Since I have handicaps, the Home button you see on the right & circled I press using my left hand. I type using a stylus with my right hand. The power cord whenever plugged in is also on the same side as the Home button. Which then the up & down buttons for the Volume are sometimes being bumped or slightly touched by whatever is on that side. I know of some ways to get the volume back again, by bringing up the control panel when swiping down from the upper right. Some things when rotated portrait mode causes some columns & panes to be truncated. I also have a terrible time distinguishing between certain characters too, so I already have so many features setup already. Closed captioning is setup for things that support those features. If I am reading an email or trying to type & then attach a picture or whatever, you sort of have to switch between apps to find things & then save the drafts to work on later. I also seem to have slight differences options that display when I press the button that says Rearrange the sidebar.

This is a new 7th Generation iPad that we are still trying to make sure everything is functioning properly. Before the 6th Generation would no longer charge anymore we did a iCloud backup & still have it in case we run into any problems with the 7th Generation not working right. Since we have done so much already, restoring to factory settings would cause a worse problem. The screen protector we have on at the moment has bubbles in it & someone will take it to Best Buy whenever it’s safe to do that but for us the Coronavirus would be deadly if anyone including me gets it.

Here is what happens when I hit the Rearrange Side Bar. Is it looking for an external keyboard or something else or trying to connect to something we are unaware of? If Connect to Server is pressed by accidentally, due to something overlapping that side & pressing something, I have no idea what it’s trying to connect to. Would this be why my keyboard is still malfunctioning at the moment?

Since I fall asleep with things in my bed waiting for things to happen, sometimes buttons & other controls get pressed & makes it more difficult to figure out what you pressed. I just have to try the best I can to describe the symptoms & pray someone out there maybe able to help. I know what Edit means too. You save the draft of an email or whatever to finish editing later on or a greeting card you are creating for someone, you have to switch the layout to fit different words or characters on the card.

Thank you very much for all of the help

Hi,

Thank you very much for trying the best you can to help answer the questions.

Just thought I would do as much as I can since one of the other problems may or may not get better tomorrow when someone from AT&T is coming to bring a new box or modem/router.

Since some of the updates past iOS 12 the iPads keep running into worse problems with getting disconnected from the internet.

Whenever anyone prints or sends something to the printer, yes if we are disconnected then no it won’t be able to print & other popups similar to what you circled will come up. If the printer is low on ink, then we are flooded with popups saying "printer is low on ink"

I can not physically do any of this stuff. Change the ink or do any of these things without getting hurt and falling. I have a caretaker who can connect to the same internet provider we all can access much better than the last few iPads we have purchased. I can login to most accounts using my Laptop which has and other devices that have internet access & the apps installed on whatever device you are trying to access them on. If they aren’t compatible then there isn’t any point to try and install anything if it wont work. I don’t use a Tablet with Android OS, but others who can connect to our internet service have not been having these problems.

Do iPads experience the issues 1st before other devices?

Bluetooth is always disabled & so is Airplane mode.

The onscreen keyboard is the only one I have think is what it’s called, unless the emoji layout is also considered external?

Since I print files & send files from apps that allow me to create the cards & other things like that, if I accidentally disable something in privacy/security settings, it could cause worse problems until we figure out what was cancelled maybe or erased accidentally. Unless when we hit "cancel" when something is malfunctioning do they think you want to cancel your account with a service or app you use?

Here are some pictures I have, one of them I circle a few keys so you can see what the keyboard looks like. If I hit the one with a microphone 🎤 it will allow what you are saying to go into the chat area, when talking with customer support or others without typing. Then we have to access other areas to include screenshots but of course can only be done when logged into that device & of course with internet connection. I used the Notes app & there is the cursor.

Here is a birthday card I just created so you can see that it seems like the apps are installed properly.

Thank you for trying to help, sorry for any confusion.

We have AT&T High Speed Uverse Internet. Have had them for years with no problems until the release of iOS 12 & above.

This is a brand new iPad & if we need to it’s under warranty so need to figure out if it’s going to function properly. We still keep running into problems with older apps trying to reinstall on the new devices & stall out too.

Why does nobody else using the internet service here have these problems?

We had someone who lives nearby come by prior to Christmas of last year to help test some things out because of customer support was wanting us to test our internet service more. That was with the 6th Generation that the battery just failed on.

I do not have an external keyboard which is why half of the updates I have no way to setup & install properly because of the setup we have to go through to complete the installation. We can’t turn those features on or off when we don’t have them.

I already have a keyboard on my Laptop which is difficult for me to physically lift in the night or whenever nobody is around to help me. Due to my health issues If I have a medical emergency, I use my iPad constantly, daily. Which is why we still have older devices I could switch back to temporarily or permanently & just give up in case something is broken on this new one.

If I catch the Coronavirus when they bring a new router/modem then wouldn’t need this iPad or anything anymore.

The on-screen keyboard is still malfunctioning for some reason. Not sure if the recent updates. This is a 7th Generation with way more space than the last one. We even have 19 days to add the Apple care plus to this iPad if we want. That’s how new this is.

I don’t know if any reason is something could be pausing to save battery power. It seems like sometimes I notice Photos app will say it’s "Paused to save battery power"

Would that be causing these problems as well as internet issues? If it’s pausing to save battery power & maybe pausing the onscreen keyboard?

Trying to resolve the on-screen keyboard malfunction will require a description of what you’re experiencing with that on-screen keyboard, and what you’ve tried, and what did or did not happen.

Pausing apps to reduce power consumption is normal.

iPadOS and app software updates are not tied to an external keyboard, or the lack thereof. Nor are update failures tied to an external keyboard, or the lack thereof.

Update failures can be tied to network issues.

Different Wi-Fi networks can have different issues, and can work sometimes and not others as other local Wi-Fi networks come and go, and as other local Wi-Fi networks are reconfigured. There are only a limited number of Wi-Fi channels available, with effectively three or maybe four channels available in 2.4 GHz, and these nearby networks can interfere. Wi-Fi network interference is a common problem in areas with lots of Wi-Fi networks active. Congestion in Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz networks is usually worse than in 5 GHz networks, but can get bad in 5 GHz networks. And sometimes the link to the internet gets congested, or slow, or doesn’t work.

Thank you very much for explaining about the updates not being tied to having an external keyboard.

I have a couple of more pictures I got from articles related to the split pane or slide over window. Not the operating system Windows.

If we get disconnected briefly or something freezes or locks up in the middle of switching between apps.

Multitasking & docking, things like that work just fine most times. Sometimes things refresh themselves when in the middle of trying to read something & jot something down.

Sometimes our correct address has been entered in wrong & other peoples personal information due to this. I have been trying to contact everyone I know who I have lost touch with over the years for certain reasons. Trying to resend anything that seems to be not going through for some reason again. They verified it is the correct address. Some of the messages will just say this message is only partially downloaded or not downloaded from the server.

If any of this is because something didn’t backup properly on the other devices before the battery or something else failed. Not sure how we would figure that out.

When looking through the App Store, some apps don’t have any price, some have Get next to it, some have Install, Play next to it if it’s already installed on your device.

Right now the battery is 72% charged. It was 100% earlier but I’ve been using it for hours on & off the charger. It seems like having it plugged in while using it causes things to constantly pull & yank on it. The internet other problem is our internet provider is not in the list of how much battery power each app consumes since it’s not an App. Then when we try & ask them how much battery power we need, we sometimes get someone who starts saying iPadOS isn’t compatible with iPhone models.

We try to send them screenshots in customer support chat with them showing the message of saying we are not currently connected even though when we look it shows Wifi is turned on. A few times Airplane Mode has become enabled & same with Bluetooth.

Partial downloads and interrupted download and pauses can be an indication of a network error; of local Wi-Fi interference, of issues with the Wi-Fi box itself, or issues or congestion the upstream connection to the Internet. Maybe also with the iPad. But there’s also clearly a whole lot going on here.

If this iPad is cellular-capable, that can provide a different path to the internet, in conjunction with a cellular plan.

Jun 19, 2020 5:19 AM in response to AmyR999

I’m confused. I don’t understand the questions that you are asking.

The original posting didn’t mention printing nor networking issues.

The keyboard shown in the screenshot is the on-screen keyboard.

Not an external physical keyboard, such as one of those offered by Apple.

I’ve had no similar issues with the iPads I’ve used, but my usage is undoubtedly different than yours. The various many iPads I’ve worked with have also been reliable, absent a few that have been physically dropped or otherwise damaged, and one then-old one that suffered a swollen battery after a number of years of use.

If your local network is flaky, then any other operations involving that network will be flaky.
