New 5TB drive uses 1.3 gb after formating

Hi everyone, I have dozens of USB HDDs and I come across this issue for the first time.

I just got a new 5TB WD_Black 2.5 GAME DRIVE which I plan to use for data.

I formatted it into Mac OS X Extended Journaled and it shows me that 1.3 gb is taken

If I reformat it to ExFat all 5 TB are free. Since when does the standard Mac OS X Extended Journaled take up extra 1.3 gbs?

HFS+ is taking up about 0.026 percent of the storage as metadata to manage the rest of the device.

You have the root directory, you have the journal storage, but mostly you have the Free list, which is keeping track of all your unallocated disk blocks. The larger the empty disk the more metadata needed to keep track of which blocks are free to be given to files as you create them.

As for exFAT, it will be using a different metadata approach to keeping track of free blocks, and/or exFAT may not keep track of how much storage is being used to manage the free blocks, so it is not easy to display this.
