Black Playback screen using TV app

I was watching The Two Towers in the TV app on my 2012 MacBook Pro in the mini player when the video started getting garbled. I quit the app and reopened it and when I resumed playback I now get no video, only audio, both in fullscreen and windowed mode. I restarted the Mac and the issue persists. The movie is streaming, not downloaded.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

Apple provides this support document for streaming issues:

If you can't stream or watch movies or TV shows from the Apple TV app, iTunes Store, or third-party apps - Apple Support


If your issue persists, and is not dependent on title, then contact Support.

If your issue is with a particular title only, then you can report it as a problem with that purchase.
