My external monitor doesn't work after I updated to high sierra

I am using a macbook Pro late 2011 15". The monitor is connected using thunderbolt to HDMI. I've tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC and starting in Safe Mode but that had no effect. So I don't know how to fix the problem please help!

Have you in anyway inhibited the discrete GPU from running (gfxCardStatus or gSwitch). I had some issues years ago with my Late 2011 15" Macbook Pro when I was forcing the integrated GPU via gfxCardStatus.

Does it work at all and just limits the allowed resolutions, or do you get nothing?

Does Applications -> Utilities -> System Information -> Graphics/Display page say anything about your external monitor?

Does Applications -> Utilities -> System Information -> Thunderbolt page say anything about your external monitor?

Have you tried another adapter? In this case ANY other mini-DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 1 adapter to anything. I'm just trying to see if the port is working.

NOTE: Most of those adapters are really mini-DisplayPort adapters when the target device is a display. I have a mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter, a mini-DisplayPort to HDMI cable, a mini-DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable, all of which I've used for various external displays over the years (said 15" is not a backup server and does not have an external monitor).
