Learning Curve for Final Cut Pro?

Hi There,

I'm fairly competent on iMovie, but I'm wondering if Final Cut Pro is the app I should be using if I want to create decent-looking videos for my school's website. A few of the things I'd like to be able to do is zoom in or out of a video clip or a still image. Or, I'd like to be able to pan over a still image. Is this possible in iMovie? Also is it possible to work with several audio tracks in iMovie or to separate the audio from a video clip? If these things are possible, I might stick with iMovie.

However, I would also like to reduce the noise in video clips, enhance colors, and so on. These are features that I have heard are part of Final Cut Pro. I feel like Final Cut is what I should be using to create a more professional product, but it's $300.00. Even if I bought it, I would have to learn how to use it. Is it hard to learn?

Do two things, and you will find out.

1) Get the Final Cut Pro free trial version. It now works for 90 days instead of the traditional 30 days.

2) Follow the excellent free course at izzyvideo. This will help you learn the fundamentals of the application and avoid many of the difficulties and mistakes that beginners have and make.

So you can learn the application and test for yourself, for free :-)

On reflection I thought my reply was a little terse, so here's a bit more info to flesh it out.

As well as numerous titles, backgrounds, transitions and video effects iMovie can do the following:-

Multiple Audio and Video Tracks

Cutaways

Blue/Green Screen

Split Screen

Picture in Picture

Adjust Opacity

Balance Colour

Colour Correction Tools

Crop to Fit , Fill and Ken Burns

Stabilise and Fix Rolling Shutter

Adjust Volume of clips

Detach Audio

Noise Reduction

Equalisation

Retiming. . . . slo-mo, fast, freeze, reverse etc.

Is that enough to be going on with?

Sounds like you are moving to the “next level”, go for it.

There will be a learning curve but when you grasp the basics of FCP X it will not be as steep as you may be thinking.

iMovie has similarities.

There is a move Libraries feature in iMovie that can with one clip open that Library in FCP X.

You can get started straight away with the free version Luis suggested to test drive FCP X.
