I used the toothpick. Still only charges sometimes. I have to plug and replug it in to get it to charge, or else sometime closing the cover sharply will cause it to charge. I have also tried the hard restart suggestion but that made no difference. I have various apple chargers, doesn't matter which one I try.
Do not use compressed air. Do not use anything liquid. Do use something like a wooden toothpick to gently pry any debris which may be in the charging port.
You may have a failing charging port. We can't diagnose this from afar. Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider for evaluation.
