can't log in with locked keychain

I wanted to use my old MacBook but couldn't remember the password so changed it using the terminal command. Great, but now I still need the old password to silence the Keychain popup windows. All the suggested workarounds didn't work. Was not given the option to make a new keychain so am at a dead end. Any other options? thanks
