does wrist detection turn off activity tracking?

I have found a problem where my phone doesnt get a notification sound, but my watch does. I later found out that when i turn off wrist detection on my watch, it somehow works for both devices. But i have been wondering, if I keep off wrist detection on my apple watch, does it still track my activity? Like, does it still fill my rings if I have wrist detection off?
