Split screen of Safari when opening from gmail

This problem is on an iPad.

Whenever I open a Safari link that’s from a gmail, the screen shows as a small screen, always on the right, too small to read. Going back to gmail doesn’t help. Only thing that works every time is to turn off and turn back on again quickly.

is this proper procedure or am I wearing out the on/off button?

You have clearly managed to enable a Safari Slide Over view - this being a major multitasking feature of iPadOS, fully detailed in the iPad User Guide for iPadOS.
