necessary permissions?

My new iMac is playing up after a recent update (Catalina 10.15.5) and now when I want to move a file or folder I get an error warning that I 'don't have the necessary permissions' or 'Finder wants to move xxx enter your password'.

Can someone tell me what or where the 'necessary permissions' now are? They weren't necessary a few days ago, so can't be THAT necessary.

And the same with permissions. I've asked myself and have given myself permission, but who else do I have to get permission from? That's like calling the guy down at the dealership and asking him for permission to drive my car to the shops, or if I can move that shopping bag onto the back seat.

I've set all the folders in the Home folder to read and write 'me only'.. if that affects things?

Any info gratefully received. Thx

Hello Davey,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It appears you are having an error warning you don't have necessary permissions to open files or folders, correct? I'm here to help you take a look in to that!

Here is an article on were to change permissions on your iMac:

Change permissions for files, folders, or disks on Mac

If the issue persists, I would suggest creating a new user account to test the settings in the admin account:

Hopefully this helps!

Cheers!

Hi davey17x,

From what I have read, have you already assigned permissions.

I can see how creating a new user won't fix the issue but would isolate if it is an issue within the account. I would recommend a Time Machine backup and re-install the macOS.

If the issue persist, I would contact Apple Support to run diagnostic on the iMac.

Thanks, As I pointed out I'd already assigned permissions (as per that link) and it's still demanding a password to change anything...

Not sure I want to create another user to confuse things further, since that won't resolve the original problem for me either way (does it??) since Admin is still not 'permitted' to admin... So I don't see how creating another user account helps that.

Cheers
