Not enough space available....but there really is. I don’t get it ?

“Not enough space available” for importing from SD Card, but I have plenty of space available. BUG?

I’m trying to import photos and videos via a micro SD card reader to my iPad Pro, but I am getting the following error message:

’’ Not enough space available. Importing requires 8.4 GB more space. Select fewer items or make more space available by removing videos, photos or songs’’

The problem is I have 828GB of storage available on my iPad and about 1TB+ on iCloud, so I definitely have plenty of storage available.

Me and my wife have the same issue. She on her 64Gb iPad and me on my iPad Pro with 256GB of storage. It pops up regularly. Rebooting sometime helps, but mostly it doens't. I have just used 38GB of 256GB on my iPad and my wife around 32GB of the 64GB available. We have a 2TB iCloud plan and there we still have 1,4TB left, so enough space there as well.

When we import the pictures via our Mac Mini we have no issue. They upload fine and are available in the Photo app on our iPhones/iPads afterwards without giving some error message.

The above issue only happens while importing through adapters and those are from Apple. This really is a mess and for us it really degrades the fun we have with our devices.

There are however work arounds of which the latter is really astonishing.

  • The first one is through wifi. We have cameras that support wifi and by using the app provided by the manufacturer we can copy them to the iPad and see them in the Photos app. No issue, but takes long if you have several hundred of pictures to copy.
  • The second is a work around making use of the official Apple adapters. Copy the image to the local storage on your iPad and when done select the copied pictures and add them to your picture library via sharing.

The latter option means that you have the pictures twice on your device without having a space issue. Just to emphasise that space isn't an issue. There really is a bug with the Photo app somehow. And this has been there for a very loooooong time and not yet solved.

And before someone suggests that other devices that are linked to our iCloud accounts are to blame. On our iPhones we have more that 60% of storage available on those devices.

So Apple. What is the underlying issue?

I have had this issue with my IPad Gen 6 since an update a few months ago. I have lots of storage available on my 256gb iPad, and much of my 2TB iCloud account unused. It is intermittent and does not always happen. I shoot RAW, so files are large, but I have had it happen randomly with both large and small transfers. I did call Apple support a while ago, and was told that it is a known iPad issue and would be addressed in future updates. That was two updates ago, and it still has not been fixed. It is an iPad only problem, since both my iPhone and Mac have never had an issue transferring images with an SD card reader, even after the transfers failed with my iPad.

I tried calling Apple a few times recently, but gave up after being on hold for over 30 minutes. On two occasions I was able to opt for a call back, but both times the return calls were blocked, so have no idea what's going on with that. I have never seen this kind if shoddy service from Apple before, and I have been a dedicated Apple user for many years. Right now, I'm pretty unhappy with this nonsense. This is the antithesis of what Apple has always stood for.

I have this same issue. iPad & Apple SD Card reader were working flawlessly for months. Out of the blue I started getting “not enough space error” ( i have plenty of space) A couple weeks ago a Second level Apple tech told me that I was the 3rd person

in one day that called With the issue. He said there was no fix and wait for an iOS update. Does that sound right to you?

thank you.
