I have entered a card into my wallet and have had it verified by the bank but it still does not activate, asking me to contact my bank for verification. How do I rectify this matter as the bank cannot help other than to tell me that it is verified it with apple and that it should now be active.

try signing out of your Apple ID and back in.
Many thanks for your reply. Have tried your suggestion and many other things, right down to completely restoring phone to factory settings and starting again. I'm able to insert the card into apple pay but not able to get them verified, albeit the bank has confirmed that have done so and notified Apple. The only card that works is the one registered in iTunes.
Also I am now unable to remove the card from Apple pay even though they are not active.
Probably another of those glitches that Apple forgot to mention when I updated my phone recently, as it worked perfectly well before the update. Looks as though I'll have to wait for another update to rectify the problem, or buy another make of phone that will allow them cards to work.
Come on Apple, Where have all your top software engineers gone? Every upgrade appears to be more of a downgrade theses days.
