The most likely explanation is that every other song in the list you're playing has been unticked (unchecked).

Unticked songs are skipped by iTunes, unless you specifically select that song to play. So you can select any unticked song and it will play, but if every other song in the current list is unticked, the player will skip them, so when the first song finishes, the player stops.

Depending upon which view you use, you can see which songs have been unticked or deselected:

    • Albums view - songs are greyed out
    • Songs view - the tickbox is empty
    • other views, including Playlists - greyed out or empty tickbox, dependent on how you have the list arranged

To turn a tick back on, for just one song at a time:

    • Albums view - right-click the song and select Tick Selection
    • Songs view - click in the empty box

If you have a lot of unticked songs, it's easier to turn them on again by using the Songs view.

When you can see the tickboxes, use the CTRL key on your keyboard and click on any empty tickbox. This will turn the ticks back on for every song in the current list. However - it's important to note a couple of things:

    1. if there is a mixture of ticked and unticked songs, your first click may turn off every tick in the list. A second click will turn them all on again
    2. bearing in mind the point made above, if you purposefully have some songs in the current list unticked, using CTRL+click will turn them on again, which may not be what you intend. Use CTRL+click with caution
