Time Machine and Catalina.

My Imac is on Catalina 10.5.5.

My MacPro is on Mojave.

I use the same Time Capsule on my network. My Imac accesses the TC via ethernet. My MacPro via Wireless.

Since my upgrade to Catalina (on the IMac) I have observed that my shut downs are not always clean and it goes to an auto restart due to some error. I have also noticed that if I make sure that if my backups via Time Machine are fully completed I am more Likely to get a clean shut down.

I have also noticed that the backups and especially the preparation take an awful long time (sometimes 5 hrs to back up 140 GB).

Further, lately, as I was playing around with my Time Capsule trying to reduce potential overheating (I may have a fan problem) and unplugging the TC power, I was losing most of my dates. This meant that I had to follow the steps in a previous article (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8368497) and re-start a backup (which took another 5 hours) to get back these dates.

What is surprising in my case, is that I have none of these problems with Mojave. It works perfectly, shows the dates, takes usually 30 minutes to complete (less activity), and I use the same TC.

I know now to shut down my IMac before I unplugged my TC for any reasons!

There has been many articles on the Time Machine App with Catalina.

But I really like the use of that software combined with TC. When it works it is great.....

Has anyone experienced the same problems.?

Note: I do use other backup softwares. I also use Time Machine scheduler on both systems and only do Daily Backups with Time Machine

I had a little time thinking about this, and maybe I went to fast in concluding that this is OS Catalina...

MyEthernet go through Time Capsule to get to my IMac and maybe I lost the connection then.. I have changed this to get my internet to a switch. One port goes to my Imac and another goes to my Time Capsule.

I will re-test this eventually.

In te mean time if someone has the answer tey could let me know.

Thanks

So to give more information:

I ran many test and found out that the process Backupd can take up to 100% of the CPU resources and causes the Shut Down to basically crash and restart.

The Backupd process in my case is activated if I turn off the power of the Time Capsule and restart it.

If I call the option to see my archived backups it comes on. Only after a power off and on.

If I abort this process before a shut down the shut down does not have any issue.

Why could this be?

This by the way does not happen with my other computer on Mojave. I can access its archived backups and the Backupd is not activated!

An other intesrting fact is that currently under Catalina if I try to get to my archived backups using "Open Time Machine" it only shows the last backup done by T M. If I unplug the ethernet connection to my TC, it shows the same thing. So for some reason, TC is not accessed by T M when it is fully connected.. Only in Catalina!

This issue did not arise before, it seems that this is only happening since the last update of Catalina. But I am not entirely sure.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have, I believe, resolve my issues with the shut down problems. They most likely were related to the Backupd (Time Machine) and BDLdaemon (Bitdefender) processes using so much resources.

1 - I have completely de-installed Bitdefender from my Imac under Catalina and this has done the trick.

2 - I have removed my Time Capsule from my system, took out the drive, reformatted it (it is 8TB), and use it now as an external Time Machine backup. No more issues with length of time Preparing backup. Backup takes minutes versus hours. I can also see all my backups now.

3 - I also use Carbon Copy to do some other backups (testing CCC snapshots at the moment)

One thing though is that I still use Bitdefender on my Mojave system. No issue there. I also use an external drive for Time Machine backups. Way quicker than using wireless.

Good luck to all.
