accidentally because I don't know how it happened, I locked the iPad. Unfortunately, I don't remember the apple ID I used 3years ago much less the password. Any suggestions on what to do? Help!

Use Apple's iForgot service, or contact their Account Security team, or if you’re the iPad’s original owner, supply Apple with its purchase receipt and ask them to remove the lock.
