Big Sur support on iMac late 2013

When I look at introduction page for new Big Sur of it clearly states: iMac 2014 and above, but if I click on the link it says 2012 and above? So which one is it, and will late 2013 iMacs be able to run it?

Does not hold water. Late 2013 MacBook Pro 13", supported

has simple Intel Iris Graphics. Late 2013 21.5" iMac, unsupported,

Intel Iris Pro graphic in base, discrete GPU otherwise and all

27" 2013 iMac have discrete GPU.

As a matter of fact, the base 27" late 2013 iMac has NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M

which has slightly higher performance than the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M

in the 15" MacBook Pro.

There is some other logic involved.

BTW, running unsupported systems is dicey at best.

Thats more in case of GPU technology and supported features like higher Vulcan and OpenGL version supported. Even if older iMac is more powerful from like late 2013 models, iMac 2014 with intel HD 5000 have newer technology implemented. So basically only devices with gpu supported technology will support new graphics interface in Big Sur natively. Rest of you with like iMac late 2013 may be able to instal unofficial way with small possible graphics glitches. Just check YT or forums in near future ;) no panic

Please look what is inside Macbook Air Mid 2013, Pro Late 2013. Intel HD 5000 or Iris 5100 both support newer GPU features, GT 750m doesn’t have those.

Basically you need min. that in case of GPU features to instal Big Sur, Apple is trying to be simple for customers. But if you need information:

DirectX

12 (11_1)

OpenGL

4.3

OpenCL

1.2

Vulkan

1.1.80

Shader Model

5.1

Take care

Based on this, just a guess, but there are probably a significantly larger
number of 2013 MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros in the wild than iMacs
hence letting them "under the wire"?

Perhaps, but there is a more obvious explanation for why the Air and Pro were let in under the wire: both shared a model ID with a 2014 model.

The mid-2013 early-2014 Airs share the Macbook Air 6,1/2 model ID. Similarly the Late 2013 and 2014 MBP share the Macbook Pro 11,1/2/3 model IDs. The Late 2013 iMac was not so lucky.

even today, when Big Sur was finally released, this page https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201634 still shows "iMac models from 2012 and newer can run the latest version of macOS. For models from before 2012, the latest compatible operating system is noted."

According to that info Big Sur must even run on 2012 Macs.

Apple, please confirm or update this page.

Thanks & Regards,

Martin

Do you work in Apple?

do you have any idea of how well Big Sur works on my iMac?

if you wish to make claims then back it up first!

all iMacs late 2012 can run Big Sur! Look at the Apple site for Big Sur... clearly you have not read further than page one!

if you cannot say something constructive, then rather say nothing and avoid embarrassing yourself, do us all the favor!
